FUTEBOL DE FRACO NIVEL

Posted by tonybiscaia on March 29, 2010

By Walter Silva

Opening Night Running Diary: Revs @ Los Angeles

Posted by Mike Marshall on March 27, 2010

Good evening, Revolution fans, and welcome to the 2010 Season Opener as the Revolution face the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.

…or if you’re Fox Soccer Channel, it’s Landon Donovan and the Los Angeles Galaxy against some other guys.

10:58 PM: Special thanks to the San Jose Earthquakes for not drawing out their 3-0 thrashing at the hands of the reigning champions.  Way to finish on time, boys.

10:59 PM: Ugh.  Just got a hold of the Revs’ starting lineup: Burpo, Sinovic, Gibbs (c), Osei, Alston, Tierney, Niouky, Phelan, Nyassi, Schilawski, Dube.  Bench: Shuttleworth, Barnes, Videira, Smith, Mansally, Boggs.

That might honestly be the worst Opening Day lineup in Revolution history.  I’m not even kidding.

Perovic Signs, Badilla Officially Gone

Posted by Mike Marshall on March 26, 2010

Good news from the Revs this afternoon:

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution announced today that the team has signed Serbian midfielder Marko Perovic and Bermudian midfielder Khano Smith. Perovic will occupy one of the team’s eight international roster spots and will join the team pending receipt of his U.S. P-1 Visa. Smith, who is a U.S. permanent resident, will count as a domestic player. Per MLS and club policy, terms of the deals were not released.

Additionally, the team has waived Costa Rican defender Gabriel Badilla. With these transactions, the team has reached the 20-player limit on its senior roster.

“We’re pleased to bring in Marko and Khano,” Revolution vice president of player personnel Michael Burns said. “Marko has a tremendous amount of experience in the top levels of European soccer and will give our attack an added dimension. Khano’s re-signing allows us added flexibility and depth in several positions.

Ten Revs Predictions for 2010

Posted by Mike Marshall on March 26, 2010

In no particular order:

Prediction #1: The Revolution will lead the league in man games lost to injury. The year hasn’t even kicked off yet, and the list of walking wounded is already long and distinguished.  Taylor Twellman and Matt Reis are already assured of being on the shelf for a significant period of time.  Guys like Cory Gibbs and Edgaras Jankauskas are injuries waiting to happen.  Even someone like Kevin Alston, who was pretty durable last year, has a history of injuries.  History tells us Shalrie Joseph will miss some time simply because he’s become a target of other teams.  I could seriously see Steve Nicol being forced to use something like 20+ different lineups simply due to missing players.

Prediction #2: The Revs will score more goals this year than they did last year. Not sure it’s really likely they could score less.  Seriously, I think Taylor Twellman will play at least a little this year, so that should help.  Zack Schilawski is something of a poor man’s Twellman, and I think they’ll probably generate a little more in terms of goal-scoring from the midfield than they did last year as well.

Even More Reason to be Happy the CBA is Done

Posted by Mike Marshall on March 26, 2010

From MLS “Insider” Bob Hunter of the Columbus Dispatch:

A source with knowledge of contract negotiations between Major League Soccer and its players said he was told that if players had gone on strike, the league would have considered shutting down a minimum of two teams, at least temporarily. Among those mentioned were New England and Columbus, though it is unclear why they were cited.

My gut reaction is that Bob Hunter is full of crap.

Oh, For F***’s Sake!

Posted by Mike Marshall on March 26, 2010

You have GOT to be kidding me:

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England has battled through a series of injuries to several of its regulars in its preparations for the first match of the season, but the Revs may have picked up their most significant injury during a training session last week.

Midfield lynchpin Shalrie Joseph suffered a right hip flexor strain last Friday and will miss Saturday night’s season opener with Los Angeles.

“I tweaked it on Friday when we just shooting around,” Joseph told MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday. “I was doing a shooting drill and it was just me not stretching enough. I felt my hip flexor go and then they told me to just be smart about it and take some time off to make sure it’s right.”

I hate this season already.

Jon Kraft talks with Gary Tanguay and Scott Zolak

Posted by Mike Marshall on March 24, 2010

We must be close to the start of a new season, because Jonathan Kraft is on Sports Radio talking about the Revolution.  The team owner/operator appeared today with 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Tanguay and Zolak Show to discuss the new season.  Among the topics covered:

  • Revolution games will be broadcast on 98.5 FM this year.  Nice move putting the games in stereo on a major station.  98.5 The Sports Hub is also the radio home for the Patriots and Bruins.
  • If he could sign any one player in the world, it would be Wayne Rooney over Cristiano Ronaldo and someone named Messier.  I can only presume he wasn’t talking about Mark.  Jon also informs us that Mr. Rooney was recently stripped of the England captaincy for some off-the-field indiscretions.
  • The club had some “nice” discussions with Somerville and some other places in regards to building a new stadium.  He thought they were potentially close to getting something done before the financial meltdown, but that things are probably a few years away at this point.
  • He hopes to see Taylor Twellman up front at some point this year with Shalrie and Zack Schilawski.

Badilla Waived… and Nothing Else is Happening

Posted by Mike Marshall on March 24, 2010

Per FDA’s blog, the Revs have waived monumental disappointment Gabriel Badilla:

Defender Gabriel Badilla has been waived by the Revolution, a team source confirmed Wednesday night. The move opens a roster spot which is expected to be filled by…

If I pretend the next line in this story doesn’t exist, I think that increases the chance it won’t actually happen.

Kudos to the Revs for cutting their losses and moving on.

PONTAPĖ DE SAIDA JÁ ESTA QUINTA FEIRA

Posted by tonybiscaia on March 22, 2010

By Walter Silva

Revs Notebook: Barnes Signed, Perovic Next?

Posted by Mike Marshall on March 20, 2010

Kudos to the Revs for getting 2nd year defender Darrius Barnes signed to a multi-year contract.  It’ll be interesting to see the numbers and cap hit on that, though.
